Health Impact Assessments (HIAs), Housing and the new Wales HIA Regulations

This session provides an overview of Health Impact Assessment (HIA), what it is, how the process works and how it can add value to the work of housing providers, Registered Social Landlords (RSLs) and their partners in a proportionate and practical way.

The session will explore the links between housing and health and demonstrate how HIA can support housing decision-making, policy development, investment, regeneration and place-based approaches. It will include a housing and public health HIA case study from practice, highlighting how HIA can be applied in a real-world housing context.

The session will also provide an overview of the new HIA Regulations in Wales, which come into force in April 2027 for public bodies. It will consider what the regulations mean for public bodies and their partners, and why they are relevant to housing practitioners and RSLs working in Wales.

The session will also provide useful CPD knowledge and learning for the wider housing, health and public sector workforce across the UK, supporting practitioners to understand the role of HIA in improving health and reducing health inequalities through housing and wider policy and practice.
