CHC statement: Welsh Government announces Affordable Homes Taskforce
Cabinet Secretary for Housing and Local Government, Jayne Bryant MS, has announced a new affordable homes taskforce, to explore how Welsh Government can help with the delivery of affordable homes, through "planning processes, land supply and encouraging close working with manufacturers of modular housing".
Commenting on the news, Hayley Macnamara, CHC head of policy and external affairs, said:
“We called for the Affordable Homes Taskforce ahead of the Welsh Labour leadership election, as we see it as a now crucial step to supercharge bringing forward affordable housing, to tackle planning issues that are slowing down development in Wales, and ensuring we are delivering the quality homes Wales’ needs at pace.
“But it is not the only solution needed to address the housing crisis.
“Wales needs a long-term, joined-up strategic approach to housing - something which housing associations, with their focus on social value, are already well placed to deliver.”
“In addition, the overall funding environment must reflect these strategic priorities while other systemic barriers to development are tackled in a way that ensures the right homes are available for people and communities.
“We are facing a big challenge here, which can’t be dealt with by one simple change. That’s why housing associations are poised to share their expertise, and play an important role in pulling Wales out of the crisis.”
