Laura Courtney
Where do you work and what do you do?
I am a Policy and External Affairs Manager at CHC. I am policy lead for welfare and for regulation and governance.
Why did you choose a career in housing?
My background is in policy influencing for charities that work on health, social care, welfare, children’s services and disability rights. That has taught me how fundamental housing is lives of individuals and to their health and wellbeing. I really wanted to work for an organisation that helps to provide homes to people across Wales.
What is the most important thing you have you learned since starting your career in housing?
I have started to learn about the amazing contribution that housing associations make to lives of their tenants and to the wider community. I am really looking forward to learning more about this, and to getting out and about to visit members.
Where would you be working, if not in housing?
Realistically, in a policy team or within Welsh government. I would have loved to have been a marine biologist though. Particularly if it involved studying sea life on a tropical island somewhere.
What’s your favourite part of the job?
I really enjoy hearing from members and holding debates on key policy issues at the SDGs. I also enjoy whole team meetings at CHC – everyone is so positive and great fun to work with.
What motivates you?
Finding solutions to problems that make a real difference to people. Learning from members about the way they support tenants and hopefully making that a bit easier through influencing policy.
How do you relax after work?
Running around Gower beaches with my three year old daughter and my husband.
What’s your greatest achievement?
My professional highlight was achieving an unprecedented level of funding for disabled children’s social care while working for the Every Disabled Child Matters campaign. In my personal life, I guess it would be climbing to the summit of Mount Kenya. It was incredible and completely terrifying.
Your most embarrassing moment?
I was interviewed in the pub by the BBC on election night in 2005. I said something cheesy about having a ‘heavy heart’. Everyone I had ever met saw it. I had emails from people I went to primary school with!
What was your last holiday destination and what did you think of it?
My last holiday was to Saint-Quay-Portrieux in Brittany. I love it there. Everyone is very cool and they drink cider from tea cups in the afternoons.
