General election 2024 results announced - now UK Government needs to take urgent action to improve lives in Wales
With the results of the 2024 general election now announced, we at Community Housing Cymru and the housing associations we represent are going to continue the calls we made throughout the campaign period, and encourage the new UK Government to take the opportunities they have to improve the lives of people in Wales.
While housing is a devolved matter, UK Government controls some of the policies affecting incomes and household costs, such as welfare and energy. We have been clear in the run up to the election that the next UK Government, which will now be led by Sir Keir Starmer, must take urgent action and:
take a holistic approach to welfare support that prevents homelessness and supports access to the rental market;
reform Universal Credit to ensure that claimants can pay for basic essentials as a minimum;
improve the Universal Credit system for both claimants and housing associations;
create an energy system that protects low-income households;
commit to supporting the social housing sector to achieve its net zero goals.
We look forward to working with Wales’s newly elected and returning MPs to push for these goals, ensuring that our communities have the support they need to live well at home.
