Cynon Taf feeling proud!
Charysse Watson is Financial Inclusion Officer with Cynon Taf Housing Association, she talks to us about what they have done as an organisation to celebrate Pride month.
“This year, we wanted to do more than just change our logo to support Pride Month. That’s why all of our staff and Board members came together in July to celebrate Pride on the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots.
We focused the event around the history of the movement, showing a video which documents the poignant events at the Stonewall Pub half a century ago. We also used it as an opportunity to promote prominent Welsh key figures who are part of the LGBTQ+ community; highlighting their successes throughout Wales and across all industries including housing, sports and entertainment.
We fully support the “Get Over It” campaign by Stonewall, which helps tackle homophobic, bi-phobic and transphobic bullying in the classroom. We know from the campaign that 45% of LGBT pupils are bullied in Britain’s schools, so leaflets and campaign posters were available for staff to read and take away with them to promote the campaign outside of the office and around the local community.
Everyone got involved and celebrated the positive atmosphere enjoying rainbow coloured mints, Pride edition Skittles, a buffet and an array of rainbow coloured temporary tattoos to mark the occasion.
This may have been the first Pride event that Cynon Taf has hosted but we all left feeling inspired. We have big ambitions for a larger event next year where all our members, our tenants and local community can get involved so watch this space!”
