CHC responds to the 20,000 additional social homes target

On Monday 13th July the Welsh Government set out a target of building 20,000 additional social homes by 2030.

The Cabinet Minister for Local Government, Housing and Planning stated this target will be achieved by focusing on delivery with the establishment of Unnos.

Unnos, a new national development body, will support in unlocking barriers to building, including land allocation and simplifying planning processes.

In response to the announcement, our CEO Stuart Ropke said:

"The announcement by the Welsh Government to deliver 20,000 social homes by March 2030 is a bold and ambitious statement of intent to end the housing emergency in Wales.

Our sector delivered 75% of affordable housing in Wales over the last Senedd term. Housing associations stand ready to deliver.

However, to turn ambition into reality, the government must take urgent action to dismantle the barriers holding back delivery. We need a long-term funding guarantee, faster planning decisions, and immediate solutions to environmental gridlocks like nutrient neutrality that are delaying much needed homes.

Working together we can build the homes Wales need to move from a housing emergency to a housing recovery.”
