UK votes to leave the European Union

Following yesterday’s Referendum on the UK’s membership of the European Union, the UK has voted to leave the EU.

51.9% voted to leave and 48.1% voted to remain, with a 71.8% turnout. In Wales, the final vote share was 52.5% (leave) to 47.5% (remain) with 17 of 22 local authorities voting to leave. Cardiff, Vale of Glamorgan, Monmouthshire, Gwynedd and Ceredigion voted to remain.

David Cameron has announced this morning that he will step down from his position in October before the Conservative Party Conference. The new Prime Minister will then need to decide when to trigger Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty which would give the UK two years to negotiate its withdrawal and a new agreement with the European Union.
