Regulation of Registered Social Landlords (Wales) Bill laid before National Assembly for Wales

The Regulation of Registered Social Landlords (Wales) Bill and Explanatory memorandum has today been laid before the National Assembly for Wales. Carl Sargeant, Cabinet Secretary for Communities and Children, has issued a written statement which can be read here.

Stuart Ropke, Chief Executive of Community Housing Cymru, said: 'We have worked closely with Welsh Government since the ONS’ decision to reclassify Welsh housing associations as public bodies last September. We welcome the news that the Cabinet Secretary has today brought forward legislation to reverse this decision.

We have previously said that the reclassification of housing associations into the public sector could ultimately restrict the development of new affordable homes and we believe that, if passed, this legislation will offer certainty to housing associations in Wales as we work towards the 20,000 affordable homes target in the Housing Supply Pact announced by Welsh Government last year in conjunction with CHC and WLGA. We will be working closely with AMs to restate the importance of this legislation as it works it way through the Assembly in the coming months.”
