Meet the Team: Julia Sorribes
What’s your name?
Julia Sorribes

Where do you work and what do you do?
I am the Member Services and Business Development Assistant at CHC

Why did you choose a career in housing?
It was more a chance encounter than a conscious choice. I was working for a small charity a couple of years ago and I knew that I needed a change, so when a friend shared an admin vacancy they’d seen on Facebook, I jumped at the chance and applied. It’s been the best decision I’ve made in years.

What is the most important thing you have learned since starting your career in housing?
That there’s a lot more to housing than ‘just’ bricks and mortar. Above all, it’s about people’s basic right to have access to a place where they can feel safe, happy and connected to the communities around them.

Where would you be working, if not in housing?
Probably as an editor or a translator – languages fascinate me and I love helping others express themselves through their writing.

What’s your favourite part of the job?
Feeling useful and knowing that in some way, no matter how small, I’m helping our members make a difference in the lives of many

What motivates you?
Being part of collaborative and creative processes

How do you relax after work?
Music and laughs with close friends

What’s your greatest achievement?
Learning to speak and (sort of) write Mandarin Chinese

Your most embarrassing moment?
I’m clumsy by nature, so there have been many embarrassing trips and falls over the years – too many to pick one! Good thing I’ve got good reflexes and I’ve learnt to laugh at myself.

What was your last holiday destination and what did you think of it?
I went to Venice for the second time over a year ago. It was as stunning as I remembered, but we caught a high tide and the canals were all flooded. The locals didn’t seem fazed by it, but rediscovering the city while knee-deep in water was an interesting and almost comical experience for us.
