Twenty years ago , Community Housing Cymru set up an Award scheme to recognise housing innovation in memory of a special person - Pat Chown. Pat gave a big part of her life to helping others and spent much of her working life helping to meet people's housing needs in Wales.

Lisa is a young single mum with four young sons. Earlier this year she was living in a hostel with few belongings and money meaning she was unable to furnish her home. Lisa had no resettlement support and with her benefits due to change from income support to Universal Credit, she was unsure who to ask for guidance.
After approaching Taff Housing for help, their Money Advisors supported Lisa in applying for her new benefits and complete a Disability Living Allowance application for her son. After both applications were successful, Lisa’s income significantly increased and she was able to pay her rent.
Research carried out by Taff’s Scrutiny Panel and Void Project highlighted people on the homelessness list, on low incomes or zero hour contracts are in need of basics such as carpets and curtains. As a result, Taff helped Lisa buy a new cooker and furniture, and claim £900 worth of essential household goods from the Discretionary Assistance Fund. Taff’s Hardship Fund also paid for Lisa and her family to have their bedrooms fitted with carpets.
