Bringing generations together
Grŵp Cynefin has recently won a prestigious award for its pioneering work to tackle loneliness in elderly people.
Since developing intergenerational programmes to bring young and older people together, Grŵp Cynefin’s work has been hailed a success with residents reporting feeling happier, more confident, and less lonely after taking part in the scheme.
For one resident, Olwen Griffiths, these visits are something to look forward to. She said, “It’s lovely to see them. They are so lively, and they communicate well with us and we enjoy talking with them. Their discipline is excellent, and we appreciate the fact that they are able to visit. It’s a highlight for me every time they come here.”
The programme began with residents from Awel y Coleg coming together with pupils from Ysgol Bro Tryweryn in Bala having a great time discovering their musical talents through interactive sessions led by professional musicians.
After the success of the first programme, Grwp Cynefin teamed up with Ysgol Pen Barras in Ruthin, with pupils visiting a local residence to read books, dance, and make arts and crafts alongside the elderly tenants.
Mavis Johns told us, “I love the visits and love talking to them and the way they enjoy doing things for us. They are very serious in teaching us how to make things. It’s lovely having the contact with them.”
Intergenerational work was also the theme at Grŵp Cynefin’s older people’s day in April 2018. Primary school children from Ysgol Dewi Sant and Ysgol Glan Morfa attended the event and took part in folk dancing, singing, and arts and crafts.
