This second level course offers an updater for those who have previously attended Level 1 and focuses in more detail on the common problem areas of UC. It offers both a deeper understanding of UC’s ways and an exploration of what can be done: by pro-active measures to reduce incidence of problems and in helping to resolve more complex issues for tenants

The course structure and timings are more flexible than Level 1, to adapt to the concerns of the group and make best use of the wisdom within it. There will still be structure, resources and case studies aplenty to break up seminar style discussions, drawing together the wisdom of the group and the lived experience from areas with the most UC experience

Suitable for: those with a good Level 1 awareness of UC who have a more in-depth role in supporting tenants with UC issues e.g. support workers, advisers, financial inclusion officers or anyone with a deeper interest in the ways of UC.

Course aims:

By the end of the course participants will be able to:

  • share frustrations and difficulties and realise “it’s not just me”
  • clarify any queries around how UC should be working
  • understand some of the problem areas of UC  - when it doesn’t seem to - and what to do about them
  • confidently challenge UC when it does go wrong
  • be better able to advise and support tenants facing the challenges from UC develop HA responses to them.

Learning methods:

  • Interactive presentations with visual aids (slides, flipcharts), Q&As, group work and case studies with a greater emphasis on discussions and sharing issues, experiences and solutions within the group
  • Practical application – case studies, group discussions, using the Book, sharing experiences
  • Resources: case studies, calculation sheets and your own copy of The Big Book of Benefits and Mental Health 2018-20 – a practical, friendly toolkit – with full generic UC coverage, but also covers key health and disability benefits
